Caroline Coward, Cello

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I was 12 when I started cello, but I was 5 when my mother enrolled me in Yamaha Music School, and 7 when I started (and ended) piano lessons.”

What is your favorite music to listen to? 

“Classical, jazz, early New York punk, and Yacht Rock”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“I'm a librarian currently working for NASA.”



What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?
 

“Stick with it! Even if it doesn't become your career, it will enrich your life tremendously.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO? 

“The orchestra keeps getting better and better. It's a joy to make music with these wonderful people.”

Why do you believe in the importance of music education?

“Music training encourages the development of neural pathways in the brain that improve cognitive function and analytics. Music education makes you better at math, science, and overall thinking.”
