Catherine Baker, Principal Flute

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I began playing flute when I was 7 years old. I asked my parents if I could start lessons, and I was hooked ever since! I am the only musician in my family, so I’m not sure where this came from.”

What is your favorite music to listen to?

“Honestly, I could never pick a favorite piece, style, or artist because I love so many different things. Some of my favorites are Lizzo, Arcade Fire, Selena, Beethoven, Prokofiev, and much of the music from the 60s and 70s.”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“I wear lots of hats in terms of work: orchestra librarian, graphic designer, music teacher, session musician and orchestral/solo performer!”

What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?

“These days there are so many amazing musicians looking to score paying jobs in the arts, you have to be ready to creatively earn money, while still staying deliberate and consistent in your musical craft for many, many, many years. Mistakes happen, but these mistakes are normal and don’t define you as a musician! Be sure you allow yourself grace, and find other activities that make you happy as well so you don’t burn out.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?

“I love playing next to my colleague, friend, and BSO Principal oboist, Laura Arganbright!”
