Jared Dalgeish, Principal Trombone
How old were you when you started playing your instrument?
“I was in the 6th grade when I first started playing trombone. I remember trying the bassoon, the flute, (which I couldn’t get a sound out of at all!) and the trumpet. But then I saw a gold shiny instrument with a cool slide sitting on the back table and I knew I had to try it! The trombone was then what I chose to play!”
What is your favorite music to listen to?
“My favorite music to listen to is soundtrack/film score music. I love watching movies and tv shows and I think it is so cool how music that is composed for film and tv really impacts your emotions and the scene that you are watching. Music is truly powerful and it is fun to listen to the creativity composers bring to film and tv scores. Also, I’m a HUGE “Star Wars” fan, so how can you NOT love the soundtrack to the Star Wars films by John Williams!”
Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?
“I am the band director at Norris Middle School where I teach 5th-8th grade band. I also work part time at Cal State Bakersfield where I teach the college low brass music majors and the brass pedagogy course.”
What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?
“One piece of advice I would give to aspiring musicians is to don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t play it wrong anymore. That is how you really know you have that one measure or measures down and learned! Also, do something that scares you everyday. You never know what doors will open for you because you took that audition or played in that one group and met certain professionals.”
What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?
“What I enjoy most about playing in the BSO is being able to make music and play the master musical works with other amazing professional musicians on stage while providing a great concert for our community. Bakersfield is rich in the arts and I am blessed, humbled, and grateful to be able to play in this awesome orchestra.”
