Laura Arganbright, Principal Oboe

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I started playing the oboe when I was 11 years old. I had played the flute for a year previously, and the piano since age 6. I didn't even know what the oboe was when my middle school band director suggested that I play it. While I continued playing flute throughout high school (and piccolo in marching band!) I really fell in love with the unique sound of the oboe, especially in orchestral music.”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“I am a freelance musician: I perform oboe wherever and whenever I can, maintain a private teaching studio, teach with the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), and manage a handmade oboe reed business.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?

“Playing great orchestral music on the oboe is one of my favorite things in life. I really appreciate the stability and growth of the BSO - every season this group has made great artistic strides, and I always look forward to the social camaraderie and feeling of community that comes with performing in an established orchestra.”

Fun Facts About Laura

“I love being in nature. I am an avid hiker, camper, and backpacker. Recent adventure highlights include completing the Trans-Catalina trail and summiting Half Dome in Yosemite. Trekking the Wonderland Trail and the Inca Trail are on my bucket list.”

“I have an affinity for tattoos and red wine, and aspire to expand my collections of each. I also collect shot glasses. I got my very first one when I started playing the oboe, to be used as a reed soaker. Now I have over 200 and collect them from all of my travel destinations.”
